Since the domestication of dogs many breeds have come to be recognized by organizations such as the American Kennel Club. These precious pooches come from countries all over the world. Ireland is home to many canine breed’s origin stories. Check out all of the breeds below broken down by category and let us know if you have a pup from this country!  You may even learn about some new breeds or find your next obsession.

Terriers

Glen of Imal Terrier – The Glen is a spirited and bold terrier with a gentle touch.

Lakeland Terrier – Bred to be protectors of sheep, this terrier also loves to protect their people.

Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier – Known for their silky soft coat and stylish attire, these popular pups love their Irish roots.

 

Hounds

Irish Wolfhound – These big boys were made for little laps.  As you can tell, they don’t always seem to notice they are the tallest of all dog breeds.

 

Sporting

Irish Red and White Setter – These pups are as fun as they look! They were recently recognized by the AKC in 2009 and have been determined to show off ever since.
